Mystery
The voice after midnight
Jo Mercer was cutting breath out of a public-information interview when the kitchen radio said, “I signed the order. I knew people were still inside.” She took her hand off the mouse. Council leader Gareth Sloane always breathed before knew, as though knowing were a burden he could set down between words. Jo had kept that breath in his campaign interviews. Hearing it now made her reach for the recorder before she had decided what she believed.
