She Arrived with Her Own Map

Nora reaches the abandoned orchard shed before you do. She has walked most of the distance alone, carrying a change of cloth and a small account of people she refuses to name aloud. You were asked to meet her by a person you trust; that does not make you the author of the journey. She has already crossed the hardest ground you know.

Historical context

Every named person, reward, route, contact, location detail and incident is invented. NPS sources ground the history in self-emancipation, varied routes and helpers, and increased danger under the 1850 Fugitive Slave Law even in free states. The story does not insert its cast into the documented actions of Harriet Tubman or other actual people. A reward-seeking betrayal remains available to preserve the original difficult choice, with consequences rather than an automatic redemptive disguise. Travel details are fictional narrative evidence, not a historical claim about a particular station or universal signaling code.
