A room that answers too late

Vance had put the photograph face down twice before admitting that was what he was doing. In it he accepted an envelope from a woman in a red coat. The corner of his mouth had his own tired twist. He had never seen the woman; he could not remember ever owning the coat the other man wore. Across the back someone had printed THE MAN YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN. The cream envelope that brought it said ROOM 408, HALCYON HOTEL. There was no request for money, no telephone number, nothing sensible to refuse.
