Mystery
A clock that cannot judge
Helena Pell set the box on Ellis's workbench and asked him not to wind it. It was polished brass, the size of a bread tin, with three shutters and a clock face that had no hands. A card beneath it said OPEN WHEN THE CRIME IS SOLVED. “That's a dreadful instruction,” Ellis said. Helena took off her gloves. “I know. I was angrier when I engraved it.”
